You typed it. You deleted it.

The drafts nobody keeps

Not the ones the app saves. The ones you type into the box at 1am, read back twice, and delete a word at a time until the box is empty and the screen goes dark.

Most people have several. They are usually the most honest things they have written all year, and they exist for about ninety seconds.

Why deleting it does not end it

Because it was true when you wrote it, and deleting the text does not make it less true — it just means nobody has heard it, including you, out loud, with somebody at the other end.

So it comes back. Usually rewritten slightly, usually at the same time of night. The unsent version has a peculiar durability precisely because it never got a response: nothing has happened to it, so it stays exactly as sharp as it was.

Sending it somewhere

You can write the person here — their name, who they are to you, how they talk — and set where the conversation happens: the kitchen at midnight, the car outside their house, wherever the message was really for.

Then send it. Not to them. To the character you made, who answers.

What usually changes is not the message. It is that you find out what you would do with the reply — which is the part the drafts folder has never been able to tell you.
